Sister Mary Eliza is celebrating 75 years of consecrated life as a Sister of the Holy Cross in 2024.

Sister Mary Eliza began her education ministry as a teacher in Michigan City, Indiana, in 1948. She then spent the following 30 years in junior and senior high schools across California and Utah, serving primarily in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. After earning her Ph.D. in 1988, she joined the staff of Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, Pasadena, California, as a senior research associate. For four years, she performed evaluation research associated with long-term care of elders. From 1992–95, Sister Mary Eliza served as the medical group’s senior planning and development specialist.

Sister Mary Eliza was an area coordinator for the Congregation from 1995 to 1999 and also served in Congregation leadership as general councilor and general treasurer from 1999 to 2004. Having supported the Sisters of the Holy Cross in varied internal positions, she currently serves in the ministry of prayer.

Sister Mary Eliza earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Saint Mary of the Wasatch College, Salt Lake City, Utah; a master’s degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana; and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
