Sister Margaret Ann Shield is celebrating 75 years of consecrated life as a Sister of the Holy Cross in 2024.

Sister Margaret Ann began her ministry in education, teaching at St. Matthew Catholic School in San Mateo, California. In 1954, Sister Margaret Ann was missioned to Bangladesh, known at the time as East Pakistan, where she would minister in varied roles for 54 years.

She taught English and history to elementary and high school students in Holy Cross institutions in Dhaka. She then trained teachers in schools across the Archdiocese of Dhaka until the conclusion of the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. She continued to train teachers at 16 elementary schools and organized empowerment programs for women’s cooperatives in Jalchatra until 1987.

For 20 years, Sister Margaret taught classes related to catechism and adult literacy, visited families, and was an animator of Christian communities in Barisal, Sonapur, and the Noakhali District. She was also a beloved mentor to temporarily professed sisters, teaching them English and religion classes. Sister Margaret Ann currently serves in pastoral ministry and community outreach at Saint Catherine by the Sea Convent, Ventura, California.

Sister Margaret Ann earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary of the Wasatch College in Salt Lake City, Utah. She also earned a master’s degree from Seattle University in Seattle, Washington.
