Act Now for a Better Tomorrow

Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si'  (on care for our common home) is an urgent call for humankind to care for the Earth and seek justice for oppressed and marginalized people everywhere. The letter affirms the interconnectedness of God, humanity and creation, and how our relationships in each of these areas affect the others. For instance, climate change is both an environmental and a social justice issue, as the health of the Earth depends on the health of its people, and vice versa.

Implementing Laudato Si'

Spurring action to address our global ecological and social crisis, the Vatican launched the Laudato Si' Action Platform. The platform provides “a space for the universal Church to learn and grow together as we take ‘decisive action, here and now’ to care for each other and the home we share.” On  November 14, 2021, our Congregation and other religious orders, churches, institutions , families and individuals set out on a seven-year journey toward global sustainability in partnership with the platform. During the first year, we focused on learning, praying and discerning the course of action we would take to better care for our world.

Expanding Our Action

For decades, Sisters of the Holy Cross have been living out the tenets of Laudato Si' through our corporate stands, the Family of Holy Cross Statement on Climate Change, and the many responsive programs envisioned by our sisters and partners in ministry. By signing on with the Laudato Si' Action Platform we have committed to elevate our efforts for the restoration of our world and all relationships.

Our Laudato Si' Pledge

We made this pledge because it is urgent and necessary, and because those communities with the fewest resources and least power are the most adversely affected by climate change. In committing to this pledge, we join the universal Church and all women and men of goodwill to lead the cultural transformation that our world desperately needs.
