New Scholarships Increase Access to Education
Inspired by our mission and our benevolent donors, the Sisters of the Holy Cross have opened a new avenue of support to increase access to education. We recently established three designated funds to help children attend our schools in Uganda, Bangladesh and India. The goal is to grow each of these education funds into lasting resources for scholarships that will benefit children today and for generations to come.
The creative spirit of our donors encouraged us to think more strategically.
A History of Access to Education
For generations, Holy Cross sisters have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. Watching it uplift individuals, especially girls, the impact spreads to families and entire communities. The sisters’ first educational ministry began in 1844, when the four founding sisters established Saint Mary’s Academy. First located in Bertrand, Michigan, the school moved south to the sisters’ motherhouse, later becoming Saint Mary’s College. The Congregation has since established more than 100 educational institutions around the world.
Compassionate donors have shared this passion for education, helping the Sisters of the Holy Cross establish many of these schools. Their support has illuminated pathways to brighter futures for numerous children facing financial barriers. This generosity has not only provided schooling—it has offered hope where opportunity once seemed impossible.
Scholarship Funds Remove Barriers
Other donors have assisted by providing individual gifts that school administrators could use to support children in need. These gifts have touched the lives of the most vulnerable children by eliminating both financial and geographical barriers. It was the creative spirit of these donors who helped children get an education that encouraged us to think more strategically.
We are deeply grateful to the generous donors who helped launch these scholarship funds. Our initial contributions came from individuals who wished to support students attending Congregation schools worldwide. These donations reflect a shared belief in the life-changing power of not only a Catholic, but a Holy Cross education.
