Varied Hours

Main Function:

Maintain the grounds, including lawn control in the summer and snow/ice removal in the winter. Provide preventative maintenance and repair on equipment. Assist in routine maintenance projects of equipment and structures.                 

Essential Functions

  • Cut, water, edge, weed and trim lawn and bushes.
  • Plant trees, shrubs, plants and flowers.
  • Keep grounds free of debris.
  • Maintain attendance and observe working hours, starting time, lunch period, breaks, quitting time, etc.
  • Comply with work rules, regulations and instructions, follow established systems and procedures, complete assignments with minimal supervision.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Remove ice and snow from sidewalks, roads and parking lots in the winter.
  • Be familiar with the varieties of trees, shrubs, annuals, etc., common to this geographical area and the specific care needs of different species.
  • Maintain the grounds shop.
  • Reset gravestones; dig graves.
  • Use and repair automatic and manual irrigation equipment.
  • Be able to lift 100 pounds.
  • Use the resources supplied by the Congregation and Sisters of the Holy Cross, Inc., properly and efficiently.


  • Clean equipment as directed.
  • Inspect equipment regularly, which includes checking operating fluids and safety devices and performing periodic maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Operate light and medium-weight equipment effectively and safely.
  • Operate heavy equipment effectively and safely.

Building and Equipment Maintenance

  • Clean the cooling tower in Central Utilities.
  • Change filters on air handling (HVAC) equipment.
  • Flush fire hydrants.
  • Assist in light construction and capital projects.
  • Install tunnel pipe.
  • Run electrical cable through conduit line.
  • Paint and complete light carpentry projects.
  • Replace fan belts.
  • Tuck point brick and make minor masonry repairs.
  • Inspect and maintain the storm and sanitary sewer systems.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment as assigned (i.e., sump pumps, tunnel lighting systems, including relamping).

Minimum Qualifications 


Work requires a high school diploma and the ability to adhere to? established rules and practices. Good mechanical aptitude and a valid driver’s license are also required.


       Minimum of three (3) years experience in grounds and equipment maintenance.


       Improper operation of equipment and failure to follow proper procedures when using chemicals could result in damage and/or injury. In this role, the individual will be given the scope of the task to be completed. He/she will then independently take steps to complete the task, pending supervisory approval.


       The ability to follow general instructions is required for the position, and work is often reviewed upon completion.

Personal Interaction

Work requires routine, casual interaction with standard politeness and courtesy.

Work Environment

       Work requires occasional exposure to inclement weather, excessive heat/cold and toxic chemicals.

Equipment Utilization

       Routinely operates power tools and machinery.

Hazards or Fatigue

       Individual may encounter hazardous conditions and experience fatigue. He/she may be subject to severe strains, sprains or fractures.

Planning and Organizing

       Works on a day-to-day schedule. Employee will plan out routine tasks, taking into account any backlogged tasks or projects. Anticipating the daily workflow, individual should be able to adjust for rush assignments or emergencies.
