A Mighty Tree
The beginnings of a renewed journey
The example and the teaching of Blessed Basil Anthony Moreau continue to inspire us.
From its early years, the Association of St. Joseph, which Father Moreau founded in 1837, welcomed lay women and men and invited them to participate in the charism and Gospel-based spirituality of his growing community, the family of Holy Cross. Father Moreau spoke and wrote often of the association and of the zeal and support of its “collaborators.”
Today, the leaders of associate groups representing the four Holy Cross congregations — Marianites of Holy Cross, Sisters of Holy Cross, Sisters of the Holy Cross, and the Congregation of Holy Cross (Midwest Province) — periodically meet to share the associate journey they are experiencing in their congregations and to discover, discuss and discern where the Holy Cross spirit is guiding them as leaders of associates called to the family of Holy Cross.
Father Moreau’s tree metaphor, which he often used to describe the vision he had for his Holy Cross family, continues to be a powerful image. There still is much fertile ground to be cultivated, and what we now see is the reawakening of this vision of the mighty tree that includes new forms of association and partnership in mission.
