Pastoral reading of the Bible
Sonia Avíncula Docarmo has been part of a biblical group in Carabayllo, near Lima, Peru, for the past three years. When she first heard about a class for biblical promoters called “What Is Hermeneutics?” she thought she would not go because “it sounded too deep for me, but I was wrong! Sister Josefina Delany ... encouraged me ... and told me I would be all right....”
The class — a four-day introduction to the art, science and practice of interpretation — is the beginning of some intensive training that will span three years. Two of our sisters, Sister Mary Josephine Delany and Sister Patricia Dieringer, helped to design the curriculum especially for those who have never seen their own potential.
“Now I am enjoying the challenge of studying texts and trying to discover the point of view,” says Sonia. “I want to thank the Sisters of the Holy Cross for making possible this preparation for us to become more competent in accompanying biblical groups in our parishes.”
