Filipino Bishops Oppose Iraq Military Strike

MANILA, Jan 28, 03 (CWNews.com) -- The Catholic bishops of the Philippines have issued a strong statement of opposition to a military strike against Iraq.

At the conclusion of their regular meeting, the members of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines approved a statement, "No to War!" which was released to the press on January 28.

Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, the president of the bishops' conference, told reporters that the bishops hoped the country's government leaders would use their influence to discourage military action. The bishops' statement urged the United Nations to provide more time for weapons inspectors to complete their work in Iraq. They argued that the United States should not launch any attack without UN approval.
