Video of the 1996 movie in which Best Actress Academy Award winner Susan
Sarandon plays Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, as Helen becomes spiritual
advisor to death-row inmate Matthew Poncelot. This documents Sister
Helen’s beginnings as the country’s leading opponent to the death
penalty. A must-see video. (122 minutes)
“Deadline”
This NBC documentary chronicles Republican Governor George Ryan’s
blanket clemency, in January 2003, to all 167 people on death row in
Illinois, commuting their sentences to life without parole. With
astounding access to special clemency hearings, the death row prisoners,
exonerated men and Governor Ryan himself, directors Katy Chevigny and
Kirsten Johnson brings the viewer directly into the emotional and legal
storm surrounding Ryan’s extraordinary decision.

Catholic Church’s position on the death penalty and encourages dialogue
on and opposition to the death penalty, in particular on the part of
