HIV/AIDS
"Pandemic: Facing AIDS" (DVD)
We are all too familiar with the statistics. In the
last 20 years, HIV/AIDS has spread across barriers and affected people in
every corner of the world. A total of 40 million people worldwide are
currently infected with the HIV virus, and that number is growing. But
beyond these numbers lie the personal stories of millions of people, and
in this highly acclaimed film, award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy offers
an intimate perspective on the unique challenges of living with the
disease. Narrated by Danny Glover, this theatrical film tells five
remarkable stories from across the globe, revealing the heartaches and
triumphs of real people coping with the stigma and effects of this
devastating epidemic. (2002/ 113 minutes)
"Beat the Drum"
A young, orphaned boy sets out for the big city to find his uncle after
a mysterious illness strikes his village. Driven by his determination to
survive and his growing social awareness, he finds a way to make an honest
living and returns to his village with a truth and understanding his
elders have failed to grasp. An emotional and timely drama reminding us
how one small voice can be the brave start of colossal change - uniting a
village, a township, and even a nation. (2007/ 114 minutes)
"Coming to Say Goodbye" DVD and VHS
This documentary, produced by Maryknoll, is a collection of
stories about courageous people living with AIDS in Kenya and Tanzania.
Interspersed throughout are the commentaries of church workers, medical
professionals, social workers and educators who stand by those who suffer,
especially those thousands of children orphaned by AIDS. All of these
stories lead us to reflect on the personal and structural aspects of the
AIDS pandemic in Africa, and to take up the role as global advocates in
combating this devastating disease. (30 minutes)
"Paying the
Price"
This video investigates the history of AIDS treatment in Africa.
It details Uganda’s success with a UN-sponsored program of price
reduction and medical education, and South Africa’s refusal to begin a
national AIDS treatment program despite defeating a drug company court
challenge to the government’s import and manufacture of generic
anti-retroviral drugs. It also looks at the success of smaller programs
that are bringing hope to many HIV-infected Africans. (28 minutes) Also
