Democracy, Nonviolence and Peace

“There is no hope for the aching world except through the narrow and straight path of nonviolence."  - Mahatma Gandhi

In today's world, violence is endemic to society. However, the emergence of a global civil society is creating new opportunities for us to craft a global culture of democracy, nonviolence and peace. This requires that we commit ourselves to work to permeate society with empathy and solidarity and redeem cultural and political from hostility, domination and aggression.

This work will include:

  • Strengthening democratic institutions at all levels, and providing transparency and accountability in governance, inclusive participation in decision making, and access to justice;
  • Integrating into formal education and life-long learning the knowledge, values and skills needed for a sustainable way of life;
  • Treating all human beings with respect and consideration; and
  • Promoting and implementing strategies to prevent violent conflict. (Earth Charter, Principle IV, 13-16)

The Earth Charter reminds us that, as a global society, we are standing "at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future." We choose to put our creativity, prayer and effort into creating a culture of democracy, nonviolence and peace. We know this will not be simple or easy, but we believe that it is possible. We invite all others to join us in this important work.

"Peace is the wholeness created by right relationships - with oneself, other persons, other life, Earth, and the larger whole."   -  Earth Charter
