Ringing bells for climate justice
“Do You Hear What I Hear?”
In solidarity with other churches around the world, the bells at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto will ring 35 times for climate justice at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 13.
Why December 13?
This date marks the height of climate negotiations at the United Nations Climate Conference (December 7–18) in Copenhagen. At 3 p.m. all churches in Denmark will ring their bells, and Christians around the world are invited to sound their own bells at 3 p.m. local time. We will join in this effort at Saint Mary’s.
Why 35 times?
This is a symbolic call to government leaders to limit carbon emissions to 350 parts per million in the final Copenhagen document.
What is happening at the Climate Conference?
World leaders there need to approve a global climate change agreement that will control emissions, preserve nature and foster a stable economy that reverences Earth’s gifts and respects Earth’s limits.
How does it affect us?
In places where the Sisters of the Holy Cross minister, the effects of climate change are already being felt. These effects of climate change result in loss of work and population migration. Human health and security are endangered by these environmental changes.
