Holy Cross School, Garrett Park, Maryland

The “living classroom” is the model for instruction and education at Holy Cross Elementary School in Garrett Park, Maryland. Combining individualized instruction by teachers with collaborative learning among students, this combination encourages innovative teachers, lively classrooms and engaged students.

Teachers try hard to offer students a variety of opportunities and resources in order to help them become “self-motivated, creative and collaborative individuals.” As at other Holy Cross schools, education here is grounded in prayer, Christian values of service and compassion, and the involvement of parents in their children’s education.

The school has a strong commitment, says Sister Sharon, to nurturing the faith life of the entire school community and bringing the school's rich tradition of bold creativity into the new millennium. Asked what Holy Cross School meant to him, one sixth grader summed it up: “[Holy Cross School] is my life – it leads me in the direction of my future.”
